
In a significant move set to inject new life into local athletics, a new Chitungwiza Athletics Board was elected at an elective meeting held at the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex.
The election, conducted in line with the National Athletics Board (NAAZ) guidelines, saw a blend of experienced athletes and dedicated administrators take the helm, promising a renewed focus on nurturing talent and regulating all athletics activities within the district.
The district currently boasts of five active clubs affiliated with the Harare Athletics Board: Mr Pace, Speed Pro, Powerhouse, Dudzai Primary, and Mhodzi Athletics Club. The newly elected board is expected to provide crucial leadership and support to these clubs, fostering a more structured and vibrant athletics environment in Chitungwiza.
Long-distance running stalwart, Mr. Collin Makaza, was overwhelmingly elected as the Chairperson of the new board. Makaza, a well-respected figure in the Zimbabwean athletics community, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the sport to his new role. He will be ably deputized by another accomplished long-distance runner, Ms. Thabitha Tsatsa, whose competitive spirit and dedication are expected to be invaluable assets.
The crucial role of Secretary General will be filled by Farisai Tapera, who will be responsible for the administrative backbone of the board. Martha Mashamhanda was elected as the Treasurer, tasked with ensuring financial accountability and sustainability for the district’s athletics initiatives.
Blessing Nyamakawo will take on the role of Organizing Secretary, a position vital for the smooth execution of events and programs. Completing the executive committee, Mr. Gondo has been appointed as the Coaches and Referees Director, a pivotal role in maintaining high standards of training and fair play within Chitungwiza athletics.
The election of this new board marks a crucial step forward for athletics in Chitungwiza. With a leadership team comprising seasoned athletes and dedicated individuals, the district is poised to see a significant boost in the development of its athletic talent, from grassroots to competitive levels. The community now looks forward to a more organized and prosperous future for the sport under the guidance of its new leadership.
